After a first mobile scanner unit for the pig breeding industry put into service in 2008, the IFIP has renewed its confidence in us and ordered a new semi-trailer equipped with a latest-generation SIEMENS Somatom integrated scanner, in order to carry out tests and studies to meet the challenges of the pig industry and OSR objectives without moving the animals.
This mobile tomography unit enables IFIP to objectively assess the pig's meat quality on different sites. By estimating the body composition of pigs (proportion of skeleton, fat and meat) in each half-carcass, they have access to precise data on the animal's composition. This information is then used to help farmers implement corrective actions to improve the quality of their production, as well as to establish the value of each pig and define the price of the meat.
The mobile unit of scanner can also be used to identify high-quality breeding males. Using the data collected by the scanner, farmers can select the best animals for breeding, improving the quality and genetic characteristics of the herd to offer meat that meets European standards and the growing demands of consumers.
This scanner could also be used in the coming months/years for studies on the quality of fresh and transformed products, for the development of new genetic selection criteria, in studies on feeding, growth or breeding techniques.
